Tamarind trees native to The Bahamas usually grew no more than thirty feet high. This variety was imported from India during the nineteenth century as part of tree-planting programmes after devastating hurricanes ravaged parts of The Bahamas. The Royal Governor of the day sent out appeals throughout the British colonies for assistance. Trees like this one were donated from India and provide shade and an edible fruit. Locals make a sauce of the fruit boiled with sugar. The meat from the tamarind fruit is used in many international steak sauces.
