Enjoy this most British of sports in Nassau. The cricket season runs from March to November. Every Saturday and Sunday cricket matches are played at Haynes Oval on West Bay Street in Nassau; games begin at noon. For further information, contact Bahamas Cricket Association President, Inspector Sydney Deveaux, telephone: (242) 322-1875.
On Grand Bahama Island, the place to play or catch this sport is the Lucaya Cricket Club, home of the island’s team. The club opened in 1982 and hosts a team of players from The Bahamas, Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad, the UK and Grenada.
Each year, two major tournaments take place at the cricket club. The Easter Festival hosts teams from the UK, the USA (yes, the Yanks actually do play cricket!) Hong Kong and other countries. The other tournament takes place at the mini festival during Thanksgiving weekend.
Even though the club is a “members only” establishment, visitors and teams are welcome to train, play a round, or watch. Visitors can even use the equipment free of charge. Full practice nets are available and training is held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The clubhouse is located in the grounds and has a full service bar, miniature gym and changing rooms.
The Lucaya Cricket Club is on Baloa Road, five minutes' walking distance from the Lucaya Golf and Country Club. For more information, contact the Cricket Club on: (242) 373-1460.
